Chapter 5

Brendan

As usual, I walked with Lucas to the bakery and picked up a cup of coffee before continuing on to the FBI building. Accompanying Lucas to his day job meant I got into the office even earlier than before, but that was all to the good, given the pressure to wrap up the investigations of potentially shady non-profit organizations. The final file in my box concerned an umbrella set of LGBT advocacy organizations. Most of them had checked out, but there were a few transactions that raised flags for possible dummy organization involvement. As I followed the paper trail and tracked down various connections, I ran smack into a name that made my stomach sink.

Chad Chambers. Lucas’s asshole ex-boyfriend.

I sighed. There would be no avoiding it; I was going to have to talk to the division head about this. I grabbed the file and headed upstairs.

Jeremy was manning the receptionist’s desk. I asked him if the director was available.

“He’s on a call right now, but if you want to wait he should be done soon.”

“Thanks.” I took a seat in one of the barrel-shaped chairs in the reception area and thumbed through a copy of the Washington Post I found on the side table I had hardly read through all the headlines when Jeremy spoke into the intercom, “Mr. Holt? Brendan Cole to see you. Okay, I’ll send him on in.”

Jason Holt was sitting behind his desk, with a blandly welcoming expression on his face that belied his impatient demeanor.

“Thank you for letting me interrupt your day,” I said without preamble. “It’s about the nonprofit investigation. In the course of my analysis of File 213, I discovered information that indicated that it may be best for me to recuse myself from that particular case.”

“What’s the concern?”

“It appears that my boyfriend’s ex is potentially involved. He and I had a public confrontation a couple of weeks ago, and he could accuse the Bureau of bias.”

“Was it violent?”

“Just yelling, nothing physical.”

Holt paused for a moment and regarded me critically. “Thanks for letting me know. As the investigation is long-standing I doubt it would be a problem, but just to be sure you should pass the case over to Sarah. Also, write a memo for the file and pass it through the General Counsel’s office.”

I thanked him again and quickly returned to the basement. It was only when I stepped onto the elevator that the thought struck me: I had just called Lucas my boyfriend.

It made explaining the potential conflict easier, but I already knew that I’d done it for another reason. With a sinking heart I realized that all my good intentions of friendship weren’t doing any good. Heartbreak was looming on the horizon.

Sarah was back from lunch when I reached our office. I explained the situation, though I was careful to call Lucas my friend this time. Based on the gleam in Sarah’s eyes I didn’t think it mattered, but she didn’t pry for more details about our relationship.

“So this ex, do you think he’s dirty?” she asked.
